All the way from the rocky, semi-desert, dry open regions of Australia is the Bearded Dragon, a lizard of the genus Pogona; these lizards are popular as family pets because of their friendly and calm nature and are especially brilliant pets for children. In the wild, they spend much of their time in trees and bushes as well as on rocks, basking in the hot sun. When the weather is very hot and reaches near 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the dragons bury themselves underground to cool down and keep their temperature constant. They posess the chameleon-like quality to change their skin colour in response to challenges from other males and changes in temperature. As pets they will live in a large glass aquarium and like to eat green leafy foods as well as the occasional mealworm or cricket, whilst avocado and rhubarb are said to be fatal if fed to a dragon. They are generally a hardy lizard and can live for up to ten or more years. How to hold them: Beardies like their bodies to be fully supported when held, and their favorite positions are lying on your chest or in your hands. Be careful with the tail and don’t appear aggressive with your approach, as wild beardies are often surprised by enemies from above. The bearded dragon is the perfect exotic pet for both adults and children, altough they wil require some special equipment and time to look after their dietry and environmental requirments.
