About the Champs:
One of Europe’s largest Outdoor Exhibitions and Agricultural Trade Shows the National Ploughing Championships attracts on average 1,100 exhibitors and 189,000 visitors. This year’s National Ploughing Championships will take place from September 25th to 27th at Heathpark, New Ross, Co. Wexford.

Showcasing Irish Food, Farming and Culture this event incorporates all sectors of agriculture and rural living from the latest development in Agri. Adopt a Hen today! 2,400 Ex-battery Hens are looking for new homes…

Volunteers with PetHelpers.ie have been advertising on BuyandSell.ie this week in the hope to save 2,400 hens from uncertain futures…

Spurred on by the recent introduction of new EU legislation around Battery Farming, PetHelpers.ie are working hard to save Ex-battery hens from an uncertain future. As a result of these efforts by the animal welfare group, 2,400 ex-battery hens are now up for adoption.

The current 2,400 hens up for adoption are from a farm in the midlands near Tina’s home (the owner of PetHelpers.ie) where they can no longer be kept due to the new legislation. These ex-battery hens are now being offered to the general public as laying  pets to be loved and cared for. Are you in a position to adopt one?

Tina is having the hens delivered this morning (23rd July 2012) where they will be held in barns and stables until homes have been found for all of the hens. A local business man that owns a car company is also lending a hand by offering up a stable to keep some of the hens until they have found new homes!

If you have been thinking of getting hens, now is a great time;

“These girls make great pets and will lay for years to come. They are very easy to look after. They’re great to have around. They’ll eat all your scraps, and are so easy to take care of!”

Interested?
Anyone interested in caring for and keeping one or more of these hens can adopt today. All that is asked is a small donation of €5 per hen. This covers the costs of buying the hens from the farmers, transport costs, feed and any necessary veterinary fees required.

By the end of this week, PetHelpers.ie are hoping to raise the total number of hens they’ve rescued to 4,000 altogether this year.

Farming News: Beef and Dairy Prices

Store Cattle Prices are Strong, yet there may be tricky times ahead for Dairy farmers as world supplies increase to record levels.

Beef; The cattle trade improved this week as trade is being helped by on-going tight supplies both in Ireland and key export markets. Store cattle prices are also strong this week (10th May 2012) with average beef breed weanling prices 28.5% higher than last year at €275.4/100kg. (Source; department of agriculture food, forestry and marine).

With an EU average increase of 19.7%, Irish weanlings are among the dearest. A reduction in live exports and strong prices for young cattle may cause difficulty for finishers in the Autumn.

Dairy; A 22.52% drop so far this year in milk prices is leading to anxiety amongst Irish dairy farmers. At this time of the year powder represents the majority of dairy products purchased at the auction. The basis for the drop in prices is an increase in global dairy production on the back of strong demand in 2010 and 2011. On the continent the Polish dairy industry has been hit hardest, this has led to calls from Poland to the EU commission to reintroduce export refunds, and increase intervention prices for butter and skimmed milk powder. With the removal of milk quotas looming there may be turbulent times ahead for the dairy industry as world supplies increase to record levels.
