Halloween is creeping up on us and the ole black bin liner and mask combination just won’t cut the mustard anymore!
Whether you’re kitting out the kiddies or hitting the club with yo’ witches, we’ll give you a tonne of ideas for fantastic homemade Halloween costumes which are cheap, easy and truly memorable!
The trick to putting together the perfect Halloween costume on a budget is to incorporate items already in your wardrobe so that all you need to do is add accessories.
This Where’s Wally costume is a perfect example of how to put together a quirky costume while also being comfortable for the night and not needing to shell out on head to toe garb.
Equally, this cowboy costume allows you to wear your usual boots, jeans and shirt with the added accessories of a large buckled belt, red handkerchief and of course badass cowboy hat! Just be sure to give it an edgy twist so that you look more Wild West than Brokeback Mountain!
Wannabe rappers have one of the easiest jobs of all! Opt for either low slung baggy jeans and t-shirt/basketball jersey or a full tracksuit, adding plenty bling and heavy chains around you neck. Sunglasses and a baseball hat with a black underscarf also look great, coupled with Ali G style facial hair (courtesy of black eye-liner!) and even a few temporary tattoos!
Some other ideas for easy costumes include; Sheikh, basketball player, pirate, thief, vampire, zombie, priest, Homer Simpson
NOTE: please steer clear of Borat and/or baby costumes- even Halloween shouldn’t be that scary!
Halloween is lauded by both men and women alike as the only day of the year when it’s socially acceptable to strut out of the house wearing lingerie and bunny ears.
Be savvy this year by investing in a costume which can come right out of your own wardrobe.
As far as inspiration goes, the public sector is always a good bet! Whether you’re dressing up as a nurse, police woman or school teacher, your accessories can be easily picked up in the toys section of your local pound shop and teamed with an appropriately coloured dress.
For example, you can create a nurse’s outfit by team a white shirt with a plain white skirt, adding red stickers and a cap easily fashioned from paper and a hairband. Buy a doctor’s kit in the pound shop and flaunt your stethoscope and thermometer. Top it all off with red heels and slinky stockings and you’re done!
The animal kingdom also lends inspiration to Halloween costumes, with rabbits and cats being firm favourites. All you need is a headband to fix some ears and a tail to top it all off. Cat woman is perfect for those with black leather clothing in their closet and can be jaw dropping when teamed with high leather stiletto boots.
The nun costume is also popular-especially for those looking to hide a bad hair day! Or opt for one of your childhood favourites by dressing as Little Red Riding Hood (red cape and basket), a fairy or angel (make wings from coat hangers and crepe paper, adding glitter and fluffy tubing from any craft shop), a genie (complete with haram pants, croptop, belly dancing belt and flats, with large earrings and a scarf draped over a high bun), Cleopatra (maxi dress, wide breastplate necklace, charcoal lined eyes and poker straight dark hair) or a doll (perfect for make-up enthusiasts, you’ll need a porcelain base, plenty blusher and dramatic eyes with false lashes).
If you’d prefer a sultry Gothic look, the classic witch costume only requires a hat and can be made as attractive or as spooky as you wish! Vampires are expected to make a comeback following the Twilight series, so be prepared with fangs, eerily white skin (usually the natural Irish complexion!) and even consider getting coloured contacts for a dramatic look. If you’d like to be a zombie bride, pop into the local charity shop and you’re bound to find an old wedding dress for the occasion!
Here are some ingenious kids’ costumes which are bound to make the neighbours giggle!
How could we possibly forget the tiny tots? Be sure that whichever costume you choose for your little one is safe, comfy and cosy.
